What is it?
A payment gateway acts as an intermediary between your
website and all the banking systems. This is a seamless
process and your customer does not interact with the gateway.
The credit card and customer details are submitted via
the gateway, which securely sends the information through
the relevant financial networks to the merchant account,
encrypting sensitive data, such as card holder information
and credit card numbers.
How does it work?
To accept credit and debit cards online through your
website (or virtual terminal) you need both a secure
payment gateway and a merchant
Please note that to take payments online you will also
need a merchant account.
Once payment has been taken both
you and the customer receive an email detailing the transaction
Why no credit card transaction
Because a gateway only sends card information securely and does not process
payments, no merchant account fees (transaction
rates) are applicable. This is left to the merchant account provider. This
works in the same way that a merchant
account does not have payment gateway fees as
this is left to the gateway provider.
Please note that with our combined
solutions we provide both the merchant account
and the gateway, therefore both these costs are applicable.
